Collaborative decision-making and action-taking

At V. we actively collaborate and work transparently, ensuring our decisions and actions are clearly made and well-informed, and with the safety & wellbeing our of colleagues at the forefront, always.

This value can be realised through;

  • engaging and involving our Group functions - HSSEQ, Legal, Technical,. Crewing etc. - to seek guidance and alignment
  • engaging peer groups to learn and improve from others' experiences, or
  • proactively engaging and utilising programs such as our PSC Support Team and V. Assurance program to leverage and drive continual improvement.

Overall, we should continually work as one team towards one aim - flawless service delivery underpinned by our HSSEQ excellence.

Effective use of V. reporting schemes

V. operates a number of fundamental reporting schemes that must be used consistently, effectively, accurately, and in a timely manner, not only address statutory requirements, but also ensure key events are communicated and that subsequent support and actions can be coordinated and learnt from;

  • V. Report - for reporting Incidents and Near Misses, and informing relevant V. peer groups of unwanted events and associated ongoing management and situation response
  • Observations - for reporting unsafe acts, unsafe conditions, or positive HSSEQ events, with a view to identify trends, develop campaigns to address these, and share associated learnings
  • Designated Persons Ashore (DPAs) - in compliance with the ISM Code, DPAs are nominated with reporting to and from themselves that assure the effective implementation of our V.MS, and for verification and monitoring of HSSEQ activities
  • 'Speak Up' - the Speak Up program is our anonymous whistleblowing program, allowing colleagues to report concerns from any area of the business and with such reports issued directly to members of V.'s Executive Team for subsequent investigation and action.

Leveraging V. Assurance, onboard and onshore

The V. Assurance program provides audit, insight, assessment, and learning opportunities from across the organisation, onshore and afloat, and with summary outcomes and improvement opportunities shared transparently for wide awareness.

V. Assurance reports against numerous statutory and industry standards, and thus serves as a proactive audit and benchmarking tool ahead of similar audits and statutory inspections being carried out by external parties.

By actively engaging with the V. Assurance team during audits, and proactively utilising their reports, assessments, and insights, colleagues across V. can learn from each other and improve their local performances ahead of external audits and inspections.

'Safety Stand-downs' as collaborative learning tools

Safety Stand-downs are a simple yet effective tool for enhancing collaboration, engagement, and ownership of HSSEQ excellence in a practical manner and relevant setting;

  • they encourage colleagues to step back and critically look at vessels and worksites that they may have become too familiar with
  • they involve as many crew members or site workers as may be available, and thus encourage a team-based safety approach where all ranks and roles are involved and empowered
  • they highlight and reinforce the importance of identifying hazards and taking effective action to address them, thus reducing the risk of an unwanted event occurring
  • they encourage and reinforce the correct reporting of such hazard identification, through the use of Safety Observations and or Near Miss reports, thus growing our reporting culture
  • overall, they set the correct, positive HSSEQ Excellence examples, through clear leadership, coaching, engagement, and empowerment in a collaborative and inclusive manner
